Bonding to installation surface
Products compatible with the Tulppa wet room board are available from ARDEX, Casco and Sika. The installation instructions include a list of Tulppa-compatible products available from these manufacturers. The boards are designed for horizontal installation. When installing the board, make sure the outward edge (the edge that is against the battens) is higher than the front edge to get the edge profile right. The innovative, patented profile solution prevents water penetration as the water would have to travel upwards in the horizontal joints between boards. This is, however, impossible because the capillarity of Finnfoam is zero – and it is matched by the properties of the ARDEX CA 20 P, Casco AquaSeal and Sikaflex AT-Connection sealant compounds. The profile at the long edge of the bottom board (the profile that is against the floor) is not sawn off. The idea is to leave enough space for sealing the wall-floor joint using ARDEX CA 20 P, Casco AquaSeal or Sikaflex AT-Connection sealing compound.
In spaces less than 600 mm wide, the board can also be installed vertically. This is the only scenario where the profile is sawn off (at the vertical joints) and leaving a flat edge against the floor is allowed.
Measure and cut the boards before starting installation work. Always start installing the boards from the bottom towards the top. When installing the bottom boards, leave a gap of approximately 2–3 mm between the board and the floor using wedges. Prepare the wedges before starting the installation work.
Start the installation by applying ARDEX CA 20 P, Casco AquaSeal or SikaBond-T2 adhesive to the battens. Apply a ribbon-like 1–2 mm thick bead of the adhesive to each batten and each fixture support to which a board will be attached.
Leave a gap of approximately 2–3 mm between the bottom board and the floor using wedges. Bond the Tulppa boards to the wall frame starting from the bottom using the Tulppa O brackets. Use spacing of approximately 600 mm. Screw on the O brackets approximately 25 mm above the floor. Apply ARDEX CA 20 P, Casco AquaSeal or Sikaflex AT-Connection adhesive compound to each bracket and smooth the adhesive onto the surface of the board using a putty knife. (The wall-floor joint sealing tape and the floor waterproofing that is installed later extends 100 mm above the floor and will cover the O brackets)
Fill the gap between the floor and the bottom board with ARDEX CA 20 P, Casco AquaSeal or Sikaflex AT-Connection sealing compound. Attach the boards to the frame beams from the profile edges of the board using Tulppa Z brackets and flathead screws. A minimum of 5 Z brackets per board should be used (using 600 mm spacing). It is a good idea to attach the board to each frame beam. Beam spacing therefore has an impact on the number of brackets required. The screw length should be at least twice the thickness of the board being attached. In a metal frame, self-drilling screws should be used.
